Disaster Outreach Event will be held Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The state and U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will host its third Disaster Outreach event Saturday in Montgomery's Lagoon Park.

Local organizations and companies, and state and federal agencies will be reaching out to disaster survivors and evacuees on a variety of levels. Those Alabama residents affected by Hurricane Katrina who are in Montgomery and the surrounding areas are invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Date and Time: Saturday, November 12, noon to 5 pm
Where: Lagoon Park Softball Complex, 2855 Lagoon Park Drive, Montgomery

A State/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center will be available so disaster-affected individuals and families can check the status of an existing application and get information on recovery programs including individual and household grants, and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and businesses. Permanent housing solutions, crisis counseling, and other disaster-related topics will be addressed by recovery specialists.

Another focus of the event will be on jobs. CareerLink of the Montgomery Career Center will offer free short-term occupational skills training that last six months or less. Volunteers for Careers will be on-hand to help with free resume writing and other job-seeking advice. Employers will be at the event to offer full-time and part-time jobs.

Companies wishing to participate or to post available jobs at the event must call 334-270-7700 before noon on Friday.

Crisis counseling provided by Alabama Project Rebound and Family Guidance Center of Alabama will also be available for individuals, children and families.

Other local and state organizations who will be at Saturday's event are: Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency, Salvation Army, Volunteer Information Center (211), and the Family Support Center of Prattville. Others invited to the event are: American Red Cross, Create Grace Ministries, First Baptist Community Ministries, First Methodist Church, Frazer Methodist Church, Freedom Life Church, Freewill Missionary Baptist Church, Good News Ministries, Head Start, Homeless Coalition, Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, Montgomery Area Food Bank, Montgomery County Health Department, Montgomery County Department of Human Resources, Shepherd's Staff Ministries, Trenholm State Technical College, United Way, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, USDA, Department of Education, HUD, and Veteran's Affairs.

Individuals with disaster-related needs who have not yet registered for assistance should call the FEMA teleregistration number, 800-621-FEMA (3362). The speech- or hearing-impaired should call (TTY) 800-462-7585. Lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice. Multilingual operators can assist applicants in many languages. Registration via the Internet is also available at www.fema.gov. The registration deadline has been extended to January 11, 2006.

Prior disaster outreach events were held in Anniston on October 22 and York on November 5.
