MONTGOMERY, Al - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is advising Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Alabama that there are interim housing options available to them in Alabama's state parks and at Fort McClellan in Anniston.

Federal Coordinating Officer Ron Sherman praised the efforts by the state government and local communities to accommodate evacuees. "Alabamians have opened their arms and, in many cases, their own homes to the victims of Katrina," Sherman said.

Sherman explained that interim housing now available in Alabama's state parks and at Fort McClellan is a major step forward in the recovery process for displaced evacuees. "Interim housing provides a transitional place where storm survivors can begin to take control of their new situation and where we can provide support services and stability during an unsettling and difficult time," Sherman said.

The official also praised the close intra-governmental cooperation and innovative thinking that has characterized the state's efforts to help residents from neighboring Gulf States. "FEMA is very appreciative of Governor Riley's commitment to help find housing for evacuees, and we're thankful to communities throughout the state who have also helped with this important task."

FEMA has placed more than 1,300 trailers in 13 state parks. As of September 15, there were 509 evacuees staying in the trailers, campsites and cabins located at the parks.

In addition, thanks to Governor Riley's ‘Operation Golden Rule' initiative, teams of volunteers are refurbishing closed barracks at Fort McClellan to make them suitable for evacuees. About 100 rooms are available at the Noble Training Center and 360 rooms will be ready next week at Fort McClellan.

"FEMA is redoubling our efforts to notify evacuees that these housing options are available to them," Sherman said.

The State of Alabama is requesting evacuees to call toll-free 1-877-273-5018 to provide information that will assist housing specialists in the interim placement program. The lines will be open between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week.
