ORLANDO, Fla. -- Panhandle area Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will temporarily suspend operations until Hurricane Katrina, presently tracking towards the central Gulf Coast area, has made landfall and all danger has passed.
All fixed centers will be closed on Monday, Aug. 29. All will remain closed until Hurricane Katrina passes and a safety and security inspection, conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Florida’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT), has been completed.
This temporary suspension of DRC activities allows local first responders to concentrate on providing all necessary emergency needs in their communities. It also allows residents to focus their attention on the pending preparations. After the danger has passed, all DRCs and personnel will return to normal operations.
Should Hurricane Katrina make landfall on the Panhandle an immediate survey of the five DRC locations will be conducted as soon as the all-clear signal is received. Once the DRC sites are inspected and approved for service, they will reopen to continue with their mission of assisting those affected by Hurricane Dennis.
