JACKSON, Miss. - State and federal disaster recovery officials remind public agencies and certain non-profits that intend to apply for FEMA Public Assistance grants to rebuild infrastructure damaged or destroyed by the Hurricane Katrina that Request for Public Assistance (RPA) forms must be submitted by December 30, 2005.

While the deadline to request public assistance nears, the President has made additional disaster assistance available by extending 100 percent federal funding of eligible costs for debris removal costs and emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance. The new time period for this extension is through March 15, 2006.

The PA program provides assistance to eligible state agencies, municipal governments and qualified private non-profit organizations for approved disaster-related costs. Eligible costs include debris removal, emergency services, repairing or replacing damaged public facilities, road repair, bridge repair, repair of water control facilities and restoration of buildings, utilities, and recreational facilities.

Government agencies, special districts and private non-profits can file online at the Mississippi Public Assistance Web site at www.mississippipa.org. Applicants may obtain information about the payment status of a project worksheet on the Web site as well.

FEMA has already obligated more than $651 million dollars in grants to Mississippi through the PA program. The state of Mississippi administers the program and allocates the money to the applicants.
