Threat Of Hurricane Rita Forces Temporary Closure Of Disaster Recovery Centers In Gulf Coast Counties

JACKSON, Miss. -- State and federal officials announced they will temporarily close the nine Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in the four southernmost counties of Mississippi.

“The centers will be closed until the threat of Hurricane Rita passes,” said Robert Latham, state coordinating officer for the disaster relief effort. The centers will reopen again to serve individuals impacted by Hurricane Katrina after the hurricane has passed. The public will be notified as soon as the Disaster Recovery Centers open again.

The following centers will close temporarily as of 5 p.m. Thursday, September 22:

Jackson County: Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, and Moss Point
Pearl River County: Poplarville, Picayune
Harrison County: Gulfport, Biloxi, Pass Christian
Hancock County: Waveland

Disaster victims are urged to register for assistance first by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or online at www.fema.gov. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 for those who are speech- or hearing-impaired.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
