What is RSS? |

Agricultural and biological engineers solve problems related to facilities, farm machinery, and irrigation and drainage systems. Their work results in technological innovations that lead to safer, higher quality foods; more efficient and environmentally sound agricultural practices; and safer equipment designs for farm and ranch operations. CSREES supports educational programs at land-grant universities and colleges that improve these institutions' capacity to provide quality degree programs in agricultural and biological engineering. Various CSREES programs also support projects that relate to research on materials, devices, and processes that expand our knowledge of agricultural, food, and environmental systems.

In Focus

• CSREES tracks how the agricultural and biological engineering profession has evolved and studies the trends of the profession.
• CSREES releases "Opportunities and Challenges in Agricultural Water Reuse" final report.

Partnerships

• MidWest Plan Service, with members from 12 Midwest land-grant universities and CSREES representation, publishes farm facility and systems manuals.
• CSREES partners with the Natural Resource, Agriculture, and Engineering Service (NRAES), a hub for the integration of research, teaching, and extension.
• Southern Region engineering department heads and CSREES representatives particpate in a multistate committee addressing agricultural engineering research.

• Galaxy III Conference: "Celebrating the Extension System: Strengths, Diversity, and Unique Qualities," Indianapolis, IN, September 15-19, 2008.

Selected Results and Impacts

• CSREES-supported research and development in tractors and other farm equipment will ensure a more uniform product with less time and fewer resources invested.
• Innovative CSREES-supported research and development in irrigation and drainage has addressed the West's multi-year drought and abundant rains in the East.
• Through Fiscal Year 2001 CSREES Fellowship grants, 13 agricultural engineering graduate students received support in the amount of $897,000.
