Agricultural Trade Multipliers
Agricultural trade multipliers provide estimates of employment and/or output effects of trade in farm and food products on the U.S. economy. These effects, when expressed as multipliers, reflect the amount of economic activity and/or jobs generated by agricultural exports. This data product offers two options through which to display agricultural trade multipliers: as pre-defined ERS estimates for the most recent calendar year available or as estimates generated by an interactive calculator that enables users to select their own basket of exports and/or apply a new set of trade margins to the commodity or basket of goods.
10/24/2007 4:00:00 PM

Commodity Costs and Returns Data
USDA has estimated annual production costs and returns and published accounts for major field crop and livestock enterprises since 1975. Cost and return estimates are reported for the U.S. and major production regions for corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, peanuts, oats, barley, sugarbeets, tobacco, milk, hogs, and cow-calf. These cost and return accounts are historical accounts based on the actual costs incurred by producers during each year.

Creative Class County Codes
The creative class thesis—that towns need to attract engineers, architects, artists, and people in other creative occupations to compete in today's economy—may be particularly relevant to rural communities, which tend to lose much of their talent when young adults leave. The ERS creative class codes indicate a county's share of population employed in occupations that require "thinking creatively." A separate break-out of employment in the arts is also included. Data are provided for all counties in the U.S. for 1990 and 2000.
10/17/2007 12:00:00 PM

Eating and Health Module (ATUS)
The Eating & Health (EH) Module of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) collects data to analyze relationships among time use patterns and eating patterns, nutrition, and obesity; food and nutrition assistance programs; and grocery shopping and meal preparation. This data set can be used to measure where, when, and how long Americans eat, and also with whom they are eating. Estimates, analysis, and microdata files are available.
5/21/2008 9:00:00 AM

Farm and Farm-related Employment
Estimates of farm and farm-related employment are derived by combining farm employment data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis with an enhanced file of the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns. These estimates, which are rich in geographic detail, provide valuable information about the importance of agriculture across the country.

How Much Do Americans Pay for Fruits and Vegetables?
In this data product, ERS has calculated total pounds or pints purchased at retail, total dollars spent, average retail price, serving size, servings per pound or pint, and dollars per serving for each form of 57 fruits and vegetables. This collection of spreadsheets contain all the data used in the report and are presented to show exactly how ERS arrived at the costs per serving figures. Each table also includes a short narrative that complements the statistics for each fruit and vegetable, detailing the nutritional benefits of each fruit and vegetable and divulging little known facts (or trivia) as well. This information should provide users with a clearer understanding of the costs of produce, the nutrient density of most fruits and vegetables, and their contributions to a healthy diet.

Major Land Uses
This data series contains estimates for major land uses in the United States, by State, for 1945-2002. The series is the only consistent historical accounting of major land uses, public and private, in all 50 States. The latest inventory of U.S. major land uses finds that total cropland area in 2002 was 442 million acres, its lowest level since 1945. Several other classes and subclasses of land are considered, including forest, pasture and range, urban, and miscellaneous and special uses such as parks and recreational areas. The annual cropland portion of the series has been consistently maintained since 1910 and has recently been updated through 2006.

Price Spreads from Farm to Consumer
ERS compares the prices paid by consumers for food with the prices received by farmers for their corresponding commodities. This data product has 2 components: (1) the marketing bill provides a composite estimate of the value added to agricultural products by the food marketing system for all types of food, and (2) at-home foods by commodity group compares farm and retail prices for foods belonging to each of several commodity groups.

Profiles of America
Profiles of America: Demographic Data and Graphic Builder, uses interactive tools to create maps, tables, and charts that display information on demographic trends, industrial structure, and the economic well-being of rural and urban communities. The program allows users to analyze rural and urban differences at the national, State, and county levels and provides useful information to community leaders, Federal officials, and researchers.
11/2/2004 10:30:00 AM

Regional Agricultural Profiles System
The Regional Agricultural Profiles System is a retrieval, aggregation, and presentation tool for 2002 Census of Agriculture data. The system allows users to query selected variables from the Census and view the results in maps, charts, and tables. Broad variable categories include basic farm characteristics, agricultural land use, crop and livestock production, sales of farm products, and government payments. The system also allows two common regional aggregations: USDA Farm Production Regions and ERS Farm Resource Regions.

Retail Scanner Prices for Meat
Average monthly weighted retail price data for selected cuts of red meat and poultry based on electronic supermarket scanner data. While not based on a random sample, the raw data underlying the database are from supermarkets across the United States that account for approximately 20 percent of U.S. supermarket sales. This data set supplements similar data supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Currently, BLS data are used to derive ERS published price spreads from farm to retail.

Rural Definitions
Most Americans share a common image of rural—open countryside and small towns at some distance from large urban centers—but not a common consensus on where and how to draw the line between rural and urban. Dozens of definitions are currently used by federal and State agencies, researchers, and policy makers. The ERS Rural Definition data product allows users to make comparisons among nine representative rural definitions, for the U.S. as a whole and for individual States. We include socioeconomic indicators (population, education, poverty, etc.) that are commonly used to highlight differences between urban and rural areas. Three display options are available: national and state indicator tables; state-level maps; and an interactive mapping utility.
9/4/2007 10:15:00 AM

Season-Average Price Forecasts
A futures-price forecasting model is used to provide season-average price forecasts for corn, soybeans, and wheat. In addition to the monthly forecasts for prices received, the model computes a forecast for the counter-cyclical payment rate for each commodity. The 2002 Farm Act provides for counter-cyclical payments when prices are below specified levels.

State Export Data
Annual estimates of U.S. exports by State and commodity group based on each States' share of U.S. agricultural production. These ERS estimates are based on two key sources of data. Export data are national-level Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) data from USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, which are not separable by State. ERS also uses State-level historical production data from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service to determine State export shares for U.S. crops and livestock. Using these approximations, a State that is the largest producer of an agricultural commodity will also account for the largest share of U.S. exports of that commodity. Compared with other estimates, these estimates of State of export origin tend to be more accurate for agricultural commodities and do not inflate the relative exports from port States or undercount those of inland States.
7/1/2008 1:00:00 PM

State Fact Sheets
The ERS State Fact Sheets contain frequently requested data for each state and for the total United States. These include current data on population, per-capita income, earnings per job, poverty rates, employment, unemployment, farm and farm-related jobs, farm characteristics, farm financial characteristics, top agricultural commodities, top export commodities, and the top counties in agricultural sales. The latest (2007) data on unemployment and 2006 per capita income and earnings per job are now available.
