From the main (product overview) page, click on the
Profiles of America link on the main page or the Population
Change 2000-2003 map to access the application, or use
the left navigation bar to "Start Using."
Use this application page as your central navigation
point to select and make your selcetions to change regions
of interest, output format, demographic variables, and
rural indicators. Optional filtering tools are also available.
What you can do:
- Create a simple table, map, or chart using any
one of approximately 100 variables in the data base.
- Download the entire data base, selected variables,
or just the variables used to create your table, map,
or chart for further analysis on your computer.
- Print or save your output for reference or later
analysis.
- Sort your table to determine the high, low, and
U.S. or State mean value for any variable. County
mean values can also be displayed and sorted when
selecting individual States.
- Conduct more detailed analysis using the filtering
tool.
Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions
If you are unsure of how to proceed, click on the help
icon
to get instructions.
Step 1Select your
desired geography using the pull-down menu. Select "United
States" (U.S.) for the 50 States, the District
of Columbia (DC), and a U.S. total. Select an individual
State to get county-level information and a State total.
Step 2Select your desired output format
using the corresponding radio buttons for tables, maps,
and charts. Table output can be sorted by clicking the
column heading. Sorting is not available for maps or
graphs, given they are images and not numeric values.
Step 3Select your topic, demographic variable
and/or a rural indicator and view your results below.
Demographic variables are grouped into eight broad topics:
Population & Migration, Age & Sex, Race &
Ethnicity, Educational Attainment, Households &
Families, Journey to Work, Employment & Unemployment,
and Income & Poverty. Select a topic from the pull
down menu, and then subset that topic by selecting a
demographic variable from the next pull-down menu (optional).
You may also select a rural indicator to view (optional)
However, demographic variables and rural indicators
can only be selected for tables. When mapping, you must
select a demographic variable or a rural indicator,
but not both. When charting, you must select a rural
indicator, which by default is the rural-urban continuum
code for 2003.
Step 4This is an optional tool recommended
for advanced or frequent users of the application. Use
the filter to tailor your output to a single category
within a rural indicator. For example, use filtering
to create a U.S. map, State map, or table showing the
percentage of the population 65 years or older (demographic
variable) using the rural-urban continuum code (rural
indicator) for counties in metro areas of 1 million
population or more (rural indicator value=1). Filtering
is not available when charting.
