Regional Assistant Chief for the NRCS Central Region Christina Muedeking announced at the NRCS Earth Day celebration at Whitewater State Park in Altura, Minnesota, that an additional $1.4 million dollars of Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) funding will be allocated to the Driftless Area of the Upper Mississippi River Basin.

RC&D Council President Martha Watts presents award to Mississippi NRCS State Conservationist Homer Wilkes (NRCS photo -- click to enlarge)Homer Wilkes Recognized
Mississippi NRCS State Conservationist Homer L. Wilkes was recently presented the Mississippi Resource Conservation and Development Council’s (RC&D) 2007 Partnership Award at the Association’s annual meeting.

Wilkes accepted the award from RC&D Council President Martha Watts Brookhaven.  Mississippi NRCS has worked in partnership efforts with the RC&D Councils to help with Hurricane Katrina clean-up efforts, community and economic development, and other council projects across the State.

Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced the designation of "Sunnyside" as the representative soil for the District of Columbia at an Earth Day event at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.  A soil profile of the District of Columbia representative soil —"Sunnyside" was pulled from a soils pit.  The profile will become a monolith that is expected to be featured with others from the 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam in a planned exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
