NRC TO HOLD NOVEMBER WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS DRAFT DOCUMENTS

ON RISK-INFORMED PIPING INSPECTION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a workshop November 19-20 in Bethesda, Maryland, to obtain public comment on two draft documents concerning an alternative method for periodically inspecting piping in operating nuclear power plants.

Workshop sessions will begin at 8 a.m. daily at the Bethesda Marriott Hotel, 5151 Pooks Hill Road.

Documents to be discussed at the workshop are a draft regulatory guide and a draft standard review plan for the use of licensees who want to utilize "risk-informed" inspections of nuclear power plant piping. With this approach, licensees would give priority to inspecting piping segments with a relatively higher safety significance.

Those who intend to participate in the workshop are asked to give advance notification in writing to the workshop contractor, Kesselman-Jones, 8912 James Ave. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87111. Kesselman-Jones also may be contacted by phone (505/271-0003); by fax (505/271-0482); or by electronic mail (kessjones@aol.com).

Free single copies of both the draft regulatory guide and standard review plan may be obtained by writing to the Printing, Graphics and Distribution Branch, U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001 or by faxing a letter to 301/415-5272. Copies are also available for inspection and copying for a fee at the NRC Public Document Room, 2120 L Street N.W. (Lower Level), Washington, DC 20555-0001. Electronic copies are accessible on the NRC's interactive rulemaking web site.
