NRC STAFF TO MEET ON JULY 17 WITH NORTHEAST UTILITIES,

NUCLEAR ENERGY ADVISORY COUNCIL REGARDING MILLSTONE PLANT

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with officials of Northeast Utilities on Thursday, July 17, to discuss the status of restart efforts at the Millstone nuclear power plant. The session will begin at 1 p.m. in the Leland F. Sillin Training Center at the plant site in Waterford, Conn., and will be open to the public for observation.

This is the latest in a series of periodic meetings between the NRC and Northeast Utilities to discuss schedules and progress toward recovery of the Millstone units. Topics will include the Independent Corrective Action Verification Programs, or ICAVPs, being conducted at Millstone Unit 3 by contractor Sargent & Lundy and at Millstone Unit 2 by contractor Parsons Power Group Inc. The ICAVPs, which were required by the NRC, are intended to ensure that key safety-related systems are functioning properly before the units are allowed to restart.

At a night meeting on the same day, NRC staff will make a sentation to Connecticut's Nuclear Energy Advisory Council. That session will begin at 7 p.m. at Waterford Town Hall and is open to the public.

The NEAC, whose members were appointed by the state Legislature, was established to, among other things, keep state officials and citizens apprised of safety issues relating to nuclear power plants in Connecticut.
