FOR REGION II NON-POWER REACTORS TO HEADQUARTERS
Region II is based in Atlanta, Georgia and encompasses 10 southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. NRC officials said the change is being made to improve efficiency. All other regulatory activities for non-power reactors are overseen at headquarters, and non-power reactor inspections constitute a small percentage of Region II activities.
Inspections of non-power reactors are conducted at intervals of one to three years and generally require one or two inspectors for one week.
Non-power reactors in Region II are licensed at the following locations:
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC University of Florida, Gainesville, FL University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA
In addition, the N.S. Savannah, a ship which at one time was powered by a nuclear reactor, is mothballed in the James River in Virginia. The reactor has been removed.
