The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's top official in the southeast will hold a news conference in Miami on May 12 to discuss NRC requirements for hurricane preparation at Florida's nuclear power plants and the agency's plans for emergency response.
Luis A. Reyes, Administrator of the NRC's Region II office in Atlanta, will meet with reporters at 3:00 p.m. at Hotel Sofitel, 5800 Blue Lagoon Drive, near the Miami airport off road 836, to discuss the agency's hurricane preparation requirements at Florida's commercial nuclear power plants. A special emergency response vehicle, satellite communications equipment and radiological monitoring devices used by the agency during emergency response will be displayed.
The news conference is being held to brief area reporters on who to contact and what to expect in Florida during the upcoming hurricane season. The NRC equipment will be in Miami for use by NRC personnel participating in a planned emergency exercise on May 13-14 at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant, operated by Florida Power & Light Company near Homestead, about 30 miles southeast of Miami.
NRC's top regional officials hold meetings with reporters each quarter at a location in each of the agency's four geographical regions to discuss with news media personnel items of current interest at commercial nuclear facilities under NRC jurisdiction.
Florida has five commercial nuclear power reactors in operation at three sites. Florida Power & Light operates two reactors at Turkey Point on Biscayne Bay near Homestead and two more at the St. Lucie plant on the Atlantic Ocean at Hutchinson Island near Ft. Pierce. Florida Power Corporation operates one reactor at the Crystal River site, located on the Gulf of Mexico near Crystal River, about 90 miles north of Tampa.
