NRC SCHEDULES MEETING WITH FLORIDA POWER CORPORATION TO DISCUSS CRYSTAL RIVER PLANT RESTART
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting with Florida Power Corporation officials at the Crystal River plant site on Wednesday, February 12 at 12 noon to discuss items related to the restart of the plant.
In September 1996, FPC voluntarily shut the Crystal River plant down when the company identified several potential unreviewed safety questions. In addition, the NRC staff had observed significant performance concerns at the plant during the past two years.
The NRC staff subsequently established a restart panel to review a number of issues before the plant returns to operation. That panel is composed of NRC technical staff members from the NRC Region II office in Atlanta and from the agency's headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, and is chaired by Region II Division of Reactor Safety Director Johns Jaudon.
The NRC staff has asked FPC to come to the February 12 meeting prepared to discuss the history of any modifications to safety systems, the company's progress on determining how current plant conditions compare to the plant's design basis, and the measurements used to assess the effectiveness of FPC's corrective action program with the results observed so far.
The meeting will be held in the Site Administration Building and is open to observation by members of the public.
