NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS

TO MEET FEBRUARY 5-8

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) has scheduled a technical meeting February 5-8 in Rockville, Maryland.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Conference Room 2B3 in the NRC's Two White Flint North Building at 11545 Rockville Pike.

Although meetings of the ACRS are open, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACRS, an advisory group to the Commission, conducts independent, highly technical reviews of safety considerations related to nuclear facilities. While anyone may attend, the committee will consider only oral or written statements arranged in advance and limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting published in the Federal Register January 23.

The meeting may include closed sessions, if required, to discuss proprietary information.

Here is the complete meeting agenda:

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5

1:00 to 1:15 p.m. -- Opening remarks by the ACRS Chairman.

1:15 to 2:45 p.m. -- Discussion with NRC staff and industry representatives on design-bases verification.

3:00 to 6:30 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6

8:35 to 9:00 a.m. -- Report by the Chairman of the Thermal Hydraulic Phenomena Subcommittee and comments on the future scope and direction of the subcommittee's review of the Westinghouse AP600 test and analysis program.

9:00 to 9:30 a.m. -- Report of the Instrumentation and Control Systems and Computers Subcommittee.

9:30 to 10:15 a m. -- Discussion of future ACRS activities.

10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon -- Discussions with NRC staff on shutdown operations risk.

1:00 to 1:30 p.m. -- ACRS discussion of responses from the NRC Executive Director for Operations to comments and recommendations included in recent ACRS reports.

1:30 to 5:30 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7

8:35 to 10:30 a.m. -- Discussions with the NRC staff on risk-informed, performance-based regulation.

10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. -- Discussions with the NRC staff

on the study performed by the Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data on the adequacy of spent fuel pool designs. Industry representatives will participate, as appropriate.

1:15 to 7:00 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7

8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. -- Report of the Planning and Procedures Subcommittee. A portion of this session may be closed to discuss organizational and personnel matters.

9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

1:30 to 2:00 p.m. -- Strategic planning session.
