ATLANTA, Ga. -- Structures on nine residential properties along the University of Kentucky Agricultural Station Branch and Eastland Park Tributary will no longer suffer from repetitive flooding due to a project funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

FEMA has approved a total of $1,004,693 for the county government to purchase the nine properties. After the property is acquired, the buildings will be demolished. Under terms of the grant, the resulting vacant land may be used as green space and no future construction will be allowed in the floodway.

The grant was awarded through FEMA's Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program. The $1 million represents a 75 percent federal share of the total project cost of $1,339,590. The remaining 25 percent will come from non-federal sources.

"This program helps states and communities apply measures that diminish or remove the long-term threat of flood damage to structures insurable under the National Flood Insurance Program. Flooding will no longer threaten these homes, thus eliminating the need for flood insurance and federal disaster assistance in the future," said FEMA Region IV Regional Administrator Phil May. "With the removal of these properties, the county government will also ensure the continued health and safety of its citizens."

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
