Closure Of Six Disaster Recovery Centers Does Not End Chance For Aid

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) that are open in six Kentucky counties this week to assist people who suffered losses from the Feb. 5-6 tornadoes will be closing soon, but this does not mean an end to the opportunity to apply for federal assistance or to obtain help with an application or appeal.
"The mobile Disaster Recovery Centers give people the chance to talk in-person with recovery specialists," said Michael Bolch, the federal official in charge of the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recovery assistance program in Kentucky. "Even after the centers close, assistance remains available every day via a toll-free phone call to the FEMA Helpline as well as online at the FEMA Web site. People can continue to apply using these resources, to follow up on their applications or to appeal a negative decision."
The DRC in Nicholas County will close at 6 p.m., Friday, March 14. The DRCs in Hopkins, Bath, Spencer, Harrison and Shelby counties will close at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 15.
"The DRCs are providing people with the chance to get answers in person to any questions they may have about the recovery process," said Charlie Winter, assistant director of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management and state coordinating officer for this event. "We want to stress, however, that anyone needing assistance should register with FEMA regardless of whether they visit a DRC."
Individuals can register for assistance online at www.fema.gov or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or for anyone with a hearing or speech impairment, TTY 800-462-7585. The toll-free line is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time seven days a week. The deadline to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance is April 21.
