NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that it is extending assistance to Fentress County to help pay for emergency services and to repair or replace public facilities damaged by the Feb. 5-6 severe storms and tornadoes.

Governmental entities, municipal authorities, school districts and certain private nonprofit organizations in the county are now eligible for assistance that may include grants for disaster-related debris removal, emergency services, and the repair or restoration of roads, bridges and other public facilities.

Under the cost-share program, FEMA Public Assistance funds 75 percent of the cost for eligible work by state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations that provide public services.

The state manages the grants for all projects. The state of Tennessee will pay 12.5 percent with the remaining 12.5 percent to come from local sources.

President Bush declared the Tennessee disaster on Feb. 7.  In all, 17 counties are available for some type of federal assistance.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
