Deadlines Nearing For Local Officials Needing Disaster Help

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Local officials of 15 West Virginia counties, who may be interested in applying for federal-state assistance for damages to community infrastructure in the wake of the severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, mudslides and landslides June 3 - 7, are approaching deadlines to request Public Assistance (PA), Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) officials said today.
As a result of a Presidential disaster declaration, officials in 15 affected local governments in these counties are eligible to apply for federal assistance to fund 75 percent of the approved costs for disaster-related debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairing, restoring or replacing damaged public facilities. The state is responsible for 25 percent of the costs.
- Officials of counties initially receiving PA designations on June 19 have until the close of business July 18 to file a request for assistance. Those counties are: Barbour, Clay, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Marion and Taylor.
- Officials of counties designated for PA on June 27 have until Saturday, July 26 to file a request for assistance. Those counties are: Braxton, Calhoun, Lewis, Ritchie, Tucker, Tyler, Webster and Wirt.
Disaster assistance also may be provided to repair, restore and replace facilities owned by certain private non-profit organizations that operate and maintain educational, utility, emergency, medical, custodial care and other essential governmental service facilities available to the public.
