FEMA Region III Releases FY 2007 Annual Report

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Highlighting a number of successes and progress on several initiatives, the Region III office of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released its annual report today. The report - available online at www.fema.gov/about/regions/regioniii/annual_reports.shtm - describes Region III's efforts to assist communities throughout the mid-Atlantic region in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
"The 2007 annual report shows that we have made significant strides in improving our readiness capabilities," said Regional Administrator Jonathan Sarubbi. "By strengthening our partnerships, operational planning and disaster response, FEMA stands ready to assist communities throughout the mid-Atlantic in the event of a disaster."
The report highlights FEMA's work throughout its jurisdiction - Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, including:

The enhancement of the Regional Response Coordination Center to increase its ability to coordinate with federal, state, and local partners during an incident.

The disbursement of grants to boost response capabilities, to help communities recover from disasters and to mitigate the impact of future hazards.

$222 million was awarded through the Homeland Security Grant Program to build and sustain the preparedness capabilities of governments throughout the region.

$20 million in Public Assistance was provided to assist communities in rebuilding damaged public facilities and infrastructure.

$85 million has gone to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations to help meet emergency respond needs.

$26 million was awarded in mitigation grants to assist state and local communities in their efforts to reduce the risks to life and property during natural disasters.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
