WAVERLY, Iowa -- Residents and former residents of Waverly will soon have an opportunity to share their thoughts about the best way to recover from the flooding that started June 10, 2008. That's the day the Cedar River, which bisects the town, crested at over 19 feet, almost eight feet above flood stage.

A community Open House will be held at the Waverly Civic Center, 200 First Street NE, from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. October 9, 2008. Rebuild Iowa Office (RIO) representatives and experienced recovery professionals from FEMA's ESF #14 Long-Term Community Recovery (LTCR) will be on hand to facilitate discussions.

Waverly suffered damage to housing and infrastructure as well as severe damage to its economy by the floods. Downtown Waverly, including the entire Main Street area, City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce as well as several residential neighborhoods, were also damaged by flood waters.

Participation in this important community Open House will allow area residents to discuss Waverly's future and exchange ideas about what challenges the City faces as well as what opportunities exist as they continue rebuilding efforts.

"It's important to plan for the long haul. Decisions made today will affect people's lives tomorrow," said Waverly City Administrator Dick Crayne.  "While considering Waverly's future, it's also particularly important for people to get information with winter coming on".

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
