JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mitigation specialists will be offering free technical advice at the Clark and Pike County fairs in Missouri. Home and business owners can get tips on risk-reducing construction techniques that can be incorporated while rebuilding.

Mitigation specialists will be at the Pike County Fair in Bowling Green beginning Thursday, July 24 from noon until 7:00 p.m. and continuing through Saturday July 26 with hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.  The booth will be located in the fair's commercial building.  Another mitigation booth will be at the Clark County Fair, in Kahoka, and will be located in the fair's main building. Specialists will be available on Thursday, July 24 through Sunday July 27, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"Mitigation information is helpful to everyone, not just the victims of flooding," said Federal Coordinating Officer Michael Karl. "Now is an ideal time to incorporate disaster-resistant measures."

Missourians rebuilding or repairing homes and businesses damaged by the recent storms and flooding are facing many choices-and opportunities-on how to rebuild. With the right information, they can rebuild in a way that may reduce future damages.

In addition to advising owners how to make properties less susceptible to future losses, mitigation specialists can provide information regarding the National Flood Insurance Program, including contact information. Residents can become familiar with the floodplain management activities in their community and how their communities can participate.

Individuals can still register for disaster assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Lines are open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, until further notice. Online registration is available anytime at www.fema.gov. The deadline to apply for federal assistance for the severe storms and flooding that occurred from June 1 to July 18, 2008 is August 27, 2008.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
