Roles of the NEHRP Agencies

The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) is managed as a collaborative effort among FEMA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The activities of the four NEHRP agencies are part of a sequential process that is referred to by the NEHRP Strategic Plan as a "research-to-practice pipeline."

NEHRP Research-to-Practice Pipeline

NSF and USGS support the basic research that produces scientific advances. USGS, NIST, the lead agency for the NEHRP, and FEMA incorporate these advances into applied research that contributes to the development of mitigation tools and information. NIST and FEMA promote and facilitate use of these tools and information by those involved in implementing earthquake mitigation measures.
