INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Time is running out for Indiana residents who lost their jobs because of severe storms, tornadoes and flooding to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). Hoosiers can apply for assistance at any Work One office. Locations can be found by visiting www.in.gov/dwd/WorkOne/regions.html.

The deadline to file for affected workers is Saturday, July 19, 2008 in Adams, Bartholomew, Brown, Clay, Daviess, Dearborn, Decatur, Gibson, Grant, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Huntington, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Parke, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan, Vermillion, Vigo, Washington and Wayne counties. Residents of Hendricks and Tippecanoe counties have until Friday, August 1, to file DUA claims. Residents of Madison county have until Friday, August 8 to file DUA claims.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced that some residents in the designated counties may be eligible for special DUA benefits. To be eligible, workers or self-employed individuals must be unemployed as a result of a major disaster in a major disaster area. The federal disaster declarations were issued as a result of severe storms, tornadoes and flooding which took place from the period May 30 - June 27.

The benefits, which also extend to self-employed persons, are funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in a program administered by the Indiana Department of Labor. The program is available to unemployed U.S. nationals and qualified aliens.

Persons in the declared counties who had to evacuate should make sure the U.S. Postal Service has their current address. Change of address requests can be submitted online at www.usps.com. After changing an address, contact FEMA to update applicant files online www.fema.gov , by phone 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
