NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE
TO MEET OCTOBER 20-22 IN AMARGOSA VALLEY AND LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) will meet in Amargosa Valley and Las Vegas, Nevada, October 20-22 to discuss self-assessment and the proposed Yucca Mountain repository.

The first meeting will be held at the Longstreet Inn, Conference Room Colorado #2, Stateline 373, Amargosa Valley. The second and third day sessions will be held at Bally's, Conference Room Las Vegas #1, 3645 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Las Vegas. The meetings will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. each day. All are open to the public.

On the first day of the meeting, the committee will conduct a self-evaluation of its performance, and examine steps to improve its operational efficiency. The second and third days will be devoted to topics such as the site characterization of Yucca Mountain for the proposed repository of high-level waste, the status of the Department of Energy's viability assessment including design options, total systems performance assessment, cost estimates and schedule, and review of the NRC's format and content guide for reactor license termination.

The committee will also discuss reports on a variety of other technical issues, and hear comments from the public, representatives from state and local governments, and tribal nations about their concerns regarding nuclear waste disposal.

Further information regarding topics to be discussed, the chairman's ruling on requests for an opportunity to present oral statements and the time allotted for them, can be obtained by contacting Richard K. Major, Chief, Nuclear Waste Branch, at (301) 415-7366.

Although meetings of the ACNW are open, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACNW was established in 1988 to advise the Commission on all aspects of nuclear waste management. While anyone may attend the sessions, the committee will consider only oral or written statements, arranged in advance and limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting to be published in an upcoming issue of the Federal Register. ACNW meeting notices, transcripts, and letter reports are available for downloading or reviewing on the internet at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW.
