26TH ANNUAL WATER REACTOR SAFETY INFORMATION MEETING TO BE HELD OCTOBER 26-28 IN BETHESDA, MD.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's 26th Water Reactor Safety Information Meeting, featuring presentations and discussions on a number of leading technical topics, will be held October 26-28 at the Bethesda, Md., Marriott Hotel.

Participants will include representatives from the NRC, U.S. government laboratories, private contractors, universities, electric industry groups, reactor vendors, and a number of foreign agencies.

Chairman Shirley Ann Jackson will deliver the keynote address at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, October 26, at the opening plenary session. Commissioner Nils J. Diaz will speak at lunchtime. A panel discussion on Tuesday morning will focus on the future of research. The luncheon speaker that day will be Carlos Vitanza, of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, who will discuss the Halden Reactor Project.

During the three-day meeting, presentations will be made in 11 technical areas -- pressure vessels; severe accidents and fission product behavior; nuclear materials issues and health effects; materials integrity; structural performance; digital instrumentation and control; the Halden Program; probabilistic risk assessment methods and applications; thermal-hydraulics; plant aging; and high burn-up fuel.
