NOTE TO EDITORS: ERROR IN ANNOUNCEMENT 98-108

An NRC press release, No. 98-108, entitled "NRC Increases Insurance Assessment for Nuclear Power Plants Based on Inflation," dated July 1, was issued in error.

The Commission has not yet acted to increase the maximum amount nuclear utilities would be assessed per licensed reactor in case of a severe accident with public liability claims exceeding $200 million.

Once the Commission acts on the increase--mandated by law to reflect changes in the Department of Labor Consumer Price Index--a new announcement will be issued. The original announcement has been removed from the NRC's Internet web page.
