No. 98-58 April 24, 1998
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received an extensive staff report containing more than 40 recommendations aimed at improving the quality, clarity and credibility of the agency's communications with all those interested in the safety oversight of nuclear power, and particularly with members of the general public.
The full report, with its attachments, is being posted on the NRC's website today in hopes of generating comments and suggestions the Commission can consider in deciding which options to implement. Comments may be e-mailed for the next 30 days to OPA@NRC.GOV and will be forwarded to each of the agency's four Commissioners.
The report is available on line at http://www.nrc.gov/OPA/pubcomm.htm.
The recommendations were developed over the past year by a coordinating committee consisting of several senior NRC officials. They reviewed the experience of other agencies and consulted extensively with stakeholders inside and outside the NRC. The committee also conducted a day-long focus group meeting at which representatives of public interest groups, news media, nuclear licensees and other organizations interested in NRC regulatory activities were asked to react as candidly as possible to a range of tentative committee findings.
