NRC OFFICIALS TO HOLD OPERATIONAL READINESS MEETING

WITH OFFICIALS OF NEW IRRADIATOR FACILITY AT FOREST, VIRGINIA

Meeting Is Open To Public Observation

Officials of the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are scheduled to meet in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 12 with officials of The Applied Radiant Energy Corporation to discuss the operational readiness of a new, underwater pool irradiator facility the company is building at Forest, Virginia.

The meeting is scheduled from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. in the Poplar Forest Room of the Holiday Inn Select at 601 Main Street in Lynchburg. Members of the public and news media organizations are welcome to attend for purposes of observation. NRC officials will be available at the meeting's conclusion to answer questions from interested observers.

The company presently operates an NRC-licensed underwater pool irradiator facility on Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg and uses radioactive cobalt-60, contained in sealed sources, to irradiate wood flooring, medical and food products. The new facility, under construction on Ventura Drive in the Forest Industrial Center, is licensed by the NRC to perform similar functions.
