NGP Center for People & the Environment

Vision
The Northern Great Plains Center for People and the Environment (NGP CP&E) at the University of North Dakota, established in spring of 2001, retains a vision to:

Build and nurture learning communities, creating an integrated view of all Earth's systems, in order to serve humankind's needs and desires for a sustainable and prosperous future.

CP&E Building Blocks
The NGP CP&E vision is realized through the operation of four components:
  1. An Environmental Information Bridge, linking residents of the Northern Great Plains to scientists who study the region;
  2. Science and Applications Research and Development, so that solutions can be provided to those residents or opportunities for them can be exploited;
  3. Data Acquisition Technologies, to allow development of instrumentation necessary to meet needs and desires; and
  4. An Earth System Science and Policy graduate degree program designed to educate in the paradigm of Earth as an integrated system and science in the service of humankind.

NGP-CP&E Connections

The UMAC Connection
No one college or university can encompass all expertise in all areas. To better leverage opportunities and take advantage of regional synergies, these components of the Center are being carried out within the framework of the Upper Midwest Aerospace Consortium (UMAC). The NGP CP&E has evolved as the core about which the full consortium is built.

A Home for NSERC
Resident within the NGP CP&E is also the National Sub-orbital Education and Research Center (NSERC), which was formed jointly by NASA and the University of North Dakota to operate NASA's DC-8 flying research laboratory. Residency within the NGP CP&E allows the laboratory to be operated as a national facility where researchers, educators, and students from our many disciplines can work cooperatively to ensure that the uses of the aircraft are driven by the science of Earth systems.

Recent Research Results
We partner with several agencies and institutions to support efforts across these elements of the Center. Recent results include:
