Federal Disaster Aid to Nebraska tops $3 Million

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Individuals and business owners are approved for more than $3 million in disaster aid to help in their recovery from the storms, tornadoes and flooding of May 22 to June 24, 2008, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced.
"There is still time to get help for damages related to the disaster," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Willie Nunn. "The deadline to register is August 19, 2008." More than 2,200 individuals have registered for aid.
The following is a summary of disaster assistance as of Sunday, July 27:
- $3,049,000 in total funds approved;
- $1,098,000 in housing and rental aid;
- $ 178,000 approved for other needs;
- $1,773,000 in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) approved loans to homes and businesses;
- 1,553 inspections are completed of 1,573 properties reported.
- 2,200 individuals called or visited the FEMA website to register.
The teleregistration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for anyone with a speech or hearing impairment. The counties declared eligible for disaster assistance are Buffalo, Butler, Colfax, Custer, Dawson, Douglas, Gage, Hamilton, Jefferson, Kearney, Lancaster, Platte, Richardson, Sarpy and Saunders. "FEMA and the State also want to encourage people who suffered work interruptions caused by the disaster to register for help," said State Coordinating Officer Cindy Newsham. "And anyone who had business interests in the declared counties, that were disrupted, should investigate their eligibility for SBAs low interest loan programs."
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
