AUSTIN, Texas -- Applicants for disaster assistance can check the status of their application by making a phone call.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials want all Texans who have registered for assistance to know there is a new "Automated Status Update" function on FEMA's toll-free registration line.

By following a series of voice-activated prompts, an applicant can access information about personal registration, eligibility status, financial compensation, the appeal process and other information.

Here's the information callers get when they dial 1-800-621-3362 or TTY 1-800-462-7585:

To access the Automated Status Update, applicants must provide their FEMA registration ID number, date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number.  If an applicant provides inaccurate information or makes an error, the call will be forwarded to FEMA Helpline staff.

Applicants may update their contact information anytime by calling the toll-free FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or the TTY line 1-800-462-7585.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
