DES MOINES, Iowa -- The city of Parkersburg debris staging site at the city water tower, located adjacent to the city of Parkersburg fire station, will remain open to the public for placement of tornado-generated debris until the contractor retained by the city begins curbside debris removal.

Once the city of Parkersburg contractor begins debris removal from the staging site, the public should simply place debris at the curb for collection by the debris contractor.

Residents need to separate their debris into three separate categories. One pile should include any household hazardous waste, which includes items like gas, oils, solvents, paint and insecticides. A second pile would include any appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, driers, air conditioners; any electronic waste including computers and televisions; and any small motorized equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers or lawn trimmers. The third pile would include vegetative debris including trees, branches or wood building products.

All debris needs to be brought to the curb or right of way because contractors are restricted from coming onto private property to pick up debris.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
