NRC INSPECTIONS FIND ANO-1 MANAGING AGING EQUIPMENT EFFECTIVELY |
||
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has completed its license renewal inspections at Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1, a nuclear plant near Russellville, Arkansas, operated by Entergy Operations, Inc. The inspections concluded that there is reasonable assurance that Entergy's aging management programs provide an adequate foundation for renewing the license for ANO-1 for an additional 20 years. Entergy has applied to the NRC to extend the ANO-1 operating license for an additional 20 years, which would allow it to operate until 2034. NRC inspectors from the Region IV office in Arlington, Texas, visited the plant twice to check programs and procedures that have been implemented to manage the effects of aging on plant safety equipment. They found aging management at ANO-1 to be effective and in conformance with NRC regulations. The Region IV inspection findings are one piece of a thorough review being conducted over about two years following the ANO-1 January 2000 request for license extension. The five-member Nuclear Regulatory Commission will make a renewal decision based on the results of this review. |
