NRC STAFF TO HOLD PREDECISIONAL ENFORCEMENT CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA ON JUNE 6 WITH TURABO CORPORATION OF CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a predecisional enforcement conference in Atlanta at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on June 6 with Turabo Corporation of Caguas, Puerto Rico, to discuss regulatory concerns related to compliance with radiation safety license requirements.

NRC informed company officials in a letter dated May 22 that a recent inspection indicated apparent violations involving failure to secure or maintain constant surveillance of portable moisture-density gauges, wear required dosimetry, leak test portable gauges at the required interval, make and maintain required records of physical inventories, list correct emergency contact information on shipping papers, and maintain shipping papers in a readily accessible location in the transport vehicle.

The conference will provide company officials with an opportunity to discuss their perspective on these matters and any other information they believe the NRC should take into consideration in making an enforcement decision.

The decision to hold a predecisional enforcement conference does not mean that a determination has been made that a violation has occurred or that enforcement action will be taken. The purpose is to discuss apparent violations, their causes and safety significance, to provide the licensee with an opportunity to point out errors that may have been made in the NRC inspection report and to enable the company to outline its proposed corrective actions.

No decision on the apparent violation or any contemplated enforcement action, such as a civil penalty, will be made at the conference. Those decisions will be made by NRC officials at a later time.
