Two More Disaster Recovery Centers Open in Cabo Rojo and Lajas 

Centers Offer Face to Face Assistance for Affected Residents

SAN JUAN, PR -- Disaster Recovery Centers will open in Cabo Rojo and Lajas on Saturday, October 11, giving residents affected by the severe storms and flooding from September 21 through October 3 an opportunity to talk to disaster assistance experts face-to-face.

Starting Saturday, the Disaster Recovery Centers will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice. They will remain open on Columbus Day, October 13.

President Bush has declared 19 municipalities eligible for individual disaster assistance, opening the way for homeowners, renters and businesses to apply for commonwealth and federal disaster aid.  Residents in these municipalities are encouraged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as soon as possible: Arroyo, Cabo Rojo, Guanica, Guayama, Guayanilla, Gurabo, Humacao, Juncos, Lajas, Peñuelas, Maunabo, Patillas, Ponce, Salinas, Santa Isabel, San Lorenzo, Villalba, Yabucoa, and Yauco.

To register for assistance, Puerto Rico residents can go online at www.FEMA.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), choose option 2 for Spanish (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). The registration lines are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Puerto Rico and FEMA officials expect additional DRCs to open in other municipalities soon. 

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
