NFIP Probation Ends for Shady Cove

SALEM, Ore. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that effective 1 November 2008, the City of Shady Cove will be returned to a position of "good standing" within the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and that the city's probation in the program will be allowed to expire. According toActing FEMA Regional Administrator Dennis Hunsinger, the city has taken decisive action to correct the critical deficiencies in their floodplain management program which led to the probationary status on 1 November 2007.
"We congratulate Shady Cove on its progress this past year, and applaud the city's commitment to sound floodplain management," said Hunsinger. "My staff is committed to working closely with city officials as they continue to resolve remaining violations, and implement their floodplain management program.
Key actions which allowed FEMA to conditionally revoke the probation were documented in the City of Shady Cove, Oregon NFIP Compliance Report, dated September 8, 2008. FEMA also received the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development's recommendation that Shady Cove be removed from probationary status.
While the probation did not affect the availability of flood insurance to Shady Cove residents, a surcharge of $50.00 was added to flood insurance premiums.
