Post Falls, Idaho -- Shoshone County has been awarded a Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Planning Grant for $66,633. The award was presented by Dave Jackson, Hazard Mitigation Officer with the Idaho Bureau of Homeland Security (BHS) to Shoshone County officials on Wednesday, August 20. The grant covers the costs of preparing a Mitigation Plan for the county.

The PDM program is administered by BHS and provides funding on a cost-share basis. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides 75 percent of the funds, and the local jurisdiction provides 25 percent.

In the Mitigation Plan, Shoshone County will identify projects designed to minimize the effects of future disasters in the county. Typically, mitigation includes such projects as: storm water management projects to reduce or eliminate long-term risk from flood hazards; protective measures for utilities, water and sanitary sewer systems and infrastructure; acquisition or relocation of hazard-prone property for conversion to open space; and seismic retrofitting of public buildings.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
