FEMA Provides $316,275 Grant To The Pierce County Fire District No. #8 In Latest Round Of Fire Grants

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded the Pierce County Fire District No. #8 $316,275 in a Staffing-for-Adequate-Fire-and-Emergency-Response (SAFER) grant.
The goal of SAFER grants is to enhance a local fire departments or district's abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (see www.nfpa.org/SAFERActGrant for more details).
In FY 2007, Congress appropriated a total of $115 million to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to carry out the activities of the SAFER grants. Appropriated funds are available for award until September 30, 2008.
SAFER Grants aim to assist a local fire departments' staffing and deployment capabilities, in order to respond to emergencies whenever they occur, assuring that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The SAFER grants have two activities that will help grantees in this endeavor: (1) hiring of firefighters and (2) recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
