FEMA/SBA Registration Deadline For Oregon Storms Approaching

SALEM, Ore., -- February 7, 2008 is the final day for individuals with damage resulting from the severe storms, wind, mudslides, landslides and flooding of December 1-17, 2007 to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and for filing applications for loans to repair physical damage with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Oregonians who live in Clatsop, Columbia, Polk, Tillamook, Washington or Yamhill Counties who suffered damage during December 1-17, 2007 should call the FEMA registration line at 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for persons with special speech or hearing needs, and register for assistance by February 7, 2008. Registration line hours are from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, Monday-Friday. Applicants may also register any time online at www.fema.gov .
Applicants should contact their insurance company and file necessary claims before contacting FEMA, as government assistance does not cover damage or losses already covered by private insurance.
FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) work closely together during disasters. SBA will open a Disaster Loan Outreach Center at 9 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, at Astoria Fire & Rescue, Public Safety Building 555 30th Street (behind the Fire Fighters Museum) Astoria, OR 97103. The Loan Outreach Center will be open 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday.
SBA has another Loan Outreach Center in Sheridan at the Sheridan City Hall, 120 SW Mill St., Sheridan, OR 97378, which will re-open Thursday, January 17 and Friday, January 18, from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
The SBA can loan homeowners up to $200,000 to repair or rebuild a primary residence to its pre-disaster condition. Homeowners and renters may be able to borrow as much as $40,000 to repair or replace personal property such as clothing, furniture and automobiles. Eligible businesses may be eligible for up to $1.5 million to repair or replace damaged facilities, business contents and working capital.
SBA representatives are at all Recovery Center locations to explain how SBA low-interest disaster loans can help homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations pay for their disaster losses, according to SBA officials. SBA will meet with applicants one-on-one and assist them in filling out their loan applications. FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with State and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and other first responders.
