CHICAGO, Ill. -- It isn't necessary to visit a Disaster Recovery Center to register for disaster aid, according to federal and state disaster officials.

Residents of the seven Illinois counties designated eligible for assistance may register with FEMA by calling the toll-free application number 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 or by going online at www.fema.gov or calling. The toll-free numbers operate 24 hours, seven days a week.

"The main reason to visit a Disaster Recovery Center is to follow up on an issue you may have after registering or if you have questions that can't be answered over the phone," said Deputy Federal Coordinating Officer Kenneth Tingman. "DRC's are primarily for those who require additional service in-person."

Those who have questions can call FEMA's toll-free number and select the "help" option. If applicant's still need information, they are encouraged to visit a DRC in their area.

To find out where the nearest DRC is located, visit www.fema.gov and click on "Disaster Assistance" on the upper right hand side, and then "Disaster Recovery Center Locator" toward the bottom of the page. Applicants can also call their local emergency manager.

The President declared a disaster on Oct. 3, making federal assistance available in the following counties: Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, LaSalle and Will.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
