PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Today is the final day for New Jersey residents and business owners to register for federal disaster assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management are encouraging all those affected by Hurricane Floyd to call the toll-free teleregistration number - 1-800-462-9029 - by 6:00 PM today.

Even though the extended registration period is closing, help remains only a phone call away. People who have already registered for assistance may call the Disaster Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 to check on the status of their filed applications or to find out more information on the various assistance programs available. Those with speech or hearing impairments may call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). The hours are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday.

As of close of business on December 16, 1999, 20,439 New Jersey residents have registered, and state, federal and volunteer assistance has been provided as follows:
