ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska has it all - including the full gammet of potential natural disasters - and disaster safety counselors are set to share their collective knowledge of disaster prevention with shoppers at the Fifth Avenue Mall, from Saturday, March 18 through March 25.
Disaster recovery and prevention specialists with the Alaska Division of Emergency Services (ADES) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available to talk to individuals about specific steps to take to reduce damages associated with disasters, including avalanches, earthquakes, floods and fires.
"We want to help people in hazard-prone areas become better prepared to withstand the ravages of disasters like earthquakes, flooding, fire and avalanches," said FEMA mitigation officer Phil Carpenter.
The multi-hazard information booth will be staffed Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM; Sunday, noon to 6 PM; and Monday - Friday, 10:30 AM to 8 PM The display, on the ground level near Penney's store entrance, features a disaster photos exhibit. Take-home materials produced by ADES, FEMA, the Municipality of Anchorage and the Red Cross encourage families to discuss hazard awareness. Materials include informational brochures, safe building suggestions, and disaster-awareness coloring books for children.
Other hazard-prevention information sites in the Anchorage area include: a disaster-prevention booth at the University Mall on Old Seward Highway, a brochure display at the University of Alaska-Anchorage in room 226 at the campus center, and safety literature at the REI sporting goods store on Northern Lights Blvd., and the Department of Natural Resources in the Atwood Building on West 7th Street.
