FEMA Suggests: This Holiday Season Think Safety

Baton Rouge, LA -- Considering the devastating effects suffered by more than 173,350 Louisianans following tropical storm Isidore and Hurricane Lili, Federal Coordinating Officer, Carlos Mitchell recommends anyone living in a flood prone area, or who anticipates the possibility of being flooded in the future, to purchase flood insurance now. "Make protecting your family and home from the devastating effects of a disaster a top priority for 2003", said Mitchell.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Louisiana Office of Emergency Preparedness (LOEP) recommend the following safety items when planning for the New Year.
- Smoke detector with extra batteries.
- Household fire extinguishers for kitchen and all bedrooms (5 pound, A-B-C type)
- Foldable ladder for evacuation of a second story in a fire.
- Heavy-duty flashlight with extra batteries and a battery-powered lamp.
- First aid kit.
- Battery-powered radio with extra batteries.
- NOAA Weather Radio with a battery backup and tone-alert feature to receive weather and other emergency alerts for your home or automobile.
- Sturdy plastic tub filled with bottled water and non-perishable, high energy food and canned goods.
- Camp stove or canned-heat stove, with extra fuel.
- Year-long policy for flood insurance.
- Hurricane shutters or cut-to-order marine plywood and heavy nails/screws for windows.
- Supplies for a pet disaster kit, including food, bottled water, leashes, toys, plastic dish and carrying case or crate.
