Receive a basic foundation for speaking, reading, writing and understanding Brazilian Portuguese with emphasis on grammar and pronunciation. Designed for participants with no prior knowledge of the language, this course also provides an introduction to aspects of Brazilian culture.

To provide the student with the ability to speak and understand Brazilian Portuguese at a basic level, using basic vocabulary and elementary concepts reflecting Portuguese as spoken in contemporary Brazilian culture.

Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand spoken Portuguese involving basic vocabulary; express basic concepts in Portuguese; understand aspects of contemporary Brazilian culture; and interact in Portuguese in easy, every day life contexts.

Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include personal pronouns; definite and indefinite articles; the verbs ser/estar/gostar de/ haver in simple present tense; prepositions and contractions; 'em/de' + definite/indefinite articles and personal pronouns; 'ar-ending' verbs in the simple present tense; plural verb forms; and verbs followed by a preposition and adjectives.

Vocabulary topics will include asking for information and assistance; excuses; requests; agreeing; introductions and greetings; soliciting; congratulations; wishes; apologies; praise; encouragement; family words; the internet; seasons of the year; weather; days of the week; cardinal and ordinal numbers; months of the year; dates; telling time; body parts; songs and culture.

Methods of instruction include grammar presentations, group conversation, listening practice, role playing and final examination.
