Overview:
Receive an introduction to speaking, reading and writing Japanese with practice in pronunciation, accent, intonation, orthography/hiragana (cursive writing) and some kanji (Chinese characters). This introductory course also includes grammar drills and discussions of cultural, political and economic aspects of modern-day Japan. ACE College Credit Recommendation Service reviewed.

To provide the student with a basic knowledge of the Japanese language and culture and also learn "hiragana".

Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to read and write hiragana; use and understand simple copular and adjectival sentences, including negative sentences; and use roughly 40 useful expressions as well as 20 basic Kanji characters.

Instruction
Major topics covered in the course are hiragana; simple copular sentences, simple adjectival sentences, basic sentence particles, negation; and culture and general background information. Topics covered include introductions, day and time, how much, going and returning, and going by taxi.

Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, presentations, tests, and final examination.
