Designed for those who need to read advanced general and technical material in German for professional, personal or test situations, this course introduces participants to relatively difficult texts in specific disciplines. With the aid of a dictionary, participants learn to recognize basic and more complex grammatical structures. Some background in German is helpful but not necessary. |

Objective
To prepare the student to read a specialized form of German in the student's own field, either for work projects or in preparation for a language examination.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to read and understand German expository prose in a variety of academic and scientific settings. This course does not teach students to speak German.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include Topics covered in this course will include the present and past tenses; case system; prefixed verbs; adjective endings and forms; perfect tenses; participial forms and usage; comparison of werden - future and passive; modal verbs; reflexes; conjunctions; adverbs; word order; passive voice; techniques connected to cognates and language history to aid them in reading. All class time will be devoted to practical application of the subject matter. A final take-home exam will be required for completion of this course.
