Overview:
Learn the Chinese system of pronunciation using the Romanized, Pinyin lettering system to produce and hear the Chinese tones and tonal changes along with spelling rules. Read, write, understand and pronounce approximately 150 vocabulary items, introduce yourself, ask for information and yes/no questions, and make polite comments and suggestions. Videos and discussions focus on Chinese culture. ACE College Credit Recommendation Service reviewed.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to read and write 150 Chinese characters; correctly pronounce Mandarin words with tones; and hold simple conversations.

Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include
  • initials and finals;
  • tones, stroke order in writing
  • and simple statements and questions.
Vocabulary topics will include
  • asking what somebody wants,
  • permission,
  • someone's name,
  • nationality,
  • directions,
  • introductions,
  • saying goodbye,
  • looking for someone,
  • expressing thanks,
  • and making comments and suggestions.
Methods of instruction include lecture, oral drills and character writing, and examinations.
