Bishop, CA (March 4, 2008)...Inyo National Forest Fire Management personnel are planning to implement prescribed burn projects at numerous locations this spring in both Mono and Inyo Counties. In Mono County, prescribed burning will occur at Casa Diablo, June Lake fuelbreak, Mammoth fuelbreak, and several locations in the Jeffrey pine forest off Bald Mountain Road, and the Owens River Road. In Inyo County, prescribed burning will occur at Seven Pines and Horseshoe Meadows. During the burning projects smoke may be visible at times from Highways 395, 203, and 158, as well as from several local communities including June Lake, Mammoth Lakes, Crowley Lake, Tom’s Place, Sunny Slopes, Swall Meadows, and Independence.
These prescribed burning projects are intended to reduce hazardous fuels in the forest, stimulate important soil nutrient cycling, and promote new vegetative growth often favored by various wildlife species. Prescribed burn operations will be conducted when weather and fuel conditions are within prescription to safely accomplish the project objectives.
