Mid-Atlantic Municipal Solid Waste

Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is defined by EPA as the waste material produced in the process of construction, renovation, or demolition of structures (both buildings and roads). In addition, it includes the materials generated as a result of natural disasters. Components of C&D debris include materials such as concrete, asphalt, wood, brick, metals, wallboard, and roofing shingles.

EPA Region 3 is working to increase the reuse and recycling of C&D materials. The Office of Solid Waste has a goal of increasing reuse and recycling of construction and demolition debris to 65% by 2011 (Draft EPA 2006 - 2011 Strategic Plan). )There are many ways to reduce the environmental impact of building projects, and at the same time, reduce project expenses. Alternatives to C&D debris disposal can save money in avoided disposal fees and potentially generate income from the sales of salvageable materials. In recent years, several deconstruction initiatives and materials reuse projects have been conducted in Region 3. For more information on these efforts, see Regional Initiatives.

In addition, many organizations provide information on reducing and recycling waste at construction and demolition sites.
